41st Rubik’s Cube Anniversary

Have you ever played with a Rubik’s Cube? Have you ever desired to solve it? Almost every one of us has once played with a Rubik’s Cube when we were children. It was one of the most entertaining combination puzzles that has ever been invented. But, how far do you know the Rubik’s Cube?

Rubik’s Cube, originally called Magic Cube, was invented by Ern Rubik, a young Professor of architecture in Budapest (Hungry), in 1974. Today is the 41st Rubik’s Cube anniversary. Rubik’s Cube is widely considered to be the worlds best-selling toy. As of January 2009, 350 million cubes have been sold worldwide making it the worlds top-selling puzzle game.

In spite of reaching its height of mainstream popularity in the 1980s, Rubik’s Cube is still widely known and used. Rubik’s cube was supposed to be a toy for children, but, nowadays, it is a toy even for adults. We can buy and play with a Rubik’s Cube wherever we want. Nowadays, there are different variations of Rubik’s Cubes with up to seventeen layers as The pocket cube (2x2x2), also known as Mini Cube; the standard cube (3x3x3); and The 17<sup>3 Over The Top cube, which is currently the largest and most expensive (costing more than a thousand dollars) available cube.

This toy was so addictive to the point of creating the Rubik’s Cube World Championship, which was first held in 1982 in Budapest, Hungary and since 2003 it has been held every two years, with Nationals and Regionals championships held in between. In such championship speed cubing, a different modality of the conventional combination puzzle, is held. The only ability needed is fingers speed.

Nowadays, this toy is still being addictive. There are a lot of applications for smartphones and tables that help people to solve the Rubik’s Cube. Furthermore last year, for the 40th anniversary, Google increased this addiction. An interactive doodle was placed instead of Google’s logo. There were millions of people in the whole world playing with it that day.

So, if you have never played with a Rubik’s Cube it is time to go to your nearest toy shop and buy a Rubik’s Cube to celebrate its 41st anniversary. No matter what your age is, you will never be older enough to play with a Rubik’s Cube. According to Ern? Rubik “If you are curious, you’ll find the puzzles around you. If you are determined, you will solve them.
