1st Star Wars Movie !
The original title of what we know now as Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope, was simply Star Wars in 1977, written and directed by George Lucas. ItÕs the first of the six films released in this space opera saga and the one that introduces the basic characters: Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, C-3P0, RD-D2, Obi-Wan, Joda, Han Solo and Chewbacca.
When the other five movies appeared in cinemas some people where confused about the order in which the films should be seen, so letÕs lend a hand.
The first three original movies are these: firstly, IV: A New Hope; secondly, V: The Empire Strikes Back; thirdly, VI: The Return of the Jedi.
Now, before Episode IV : A New Hope, Lucas put a three-prequel trilogy, that is, I: The Phantom Menace, II: Attack of the Clones, and III: Revenge of the Sith.
I: The Phantom Menace (prequel trilogy)
II: Attack of the Clones (prequel trilogy)
III: Revenge of the Sith (prequel trilogy)
IV: A New Hope (original trilogy)
V: The Empire Strikes Back (original trilogy)
VI: The Return of the Jedi (original trilogy)
As you can see, it all really depends on the way youÕd like to follow the story. You can do it either in a strictly chronologic releasing order or in the order the saga suggests.
No one exactly knows why George Lucas did this, but the truth is that he had the idea of creating an epic adventure divided in parts. On the other hand, he didnÕt expect that A New Hope were such a success, but it was! Imagine how much this saga has had an influence that its first film was selected to be preserved in the Library of Congress (U.S.A.) as part of its National Film Registry.
Anyway, what matters is that you enjoy this sci-fi opera. What about a galactic Star Wars marathon with your best friends, with delicious popcorn on a Saturday night?
May the force be with you!
